Another tough week for East St. Mary football

Week 3 was another long one for East St. Mary football teams.
Berwick dropped a 52-22 decision to Franklin on Friday (see related story). H.L. Bourgeois beat Central Catholic 34-14, and St. Edmund downed Morgan City 60-0.
Catholic-New Iberia outran Patterson 56-21. West St. Mary went to 3-0 by beating Thrive Academy 58-0, while Hanson Memorial fell 50-0 to South Terrebonne. Thomas Jefferson was a 48-28 winner over Centerville.
H.L. Bourgeois 34,
Central Catholic 14
Central Catholic dropped to 1-2 with the loss, but don’t think the Eagles didn’t get something out of the Thursday game.
Central Catholic has front-loaded its schedule in recent years to prepare for the District 7-1A games ahead. After beating White Castle in this year’s opener, the Eagles have now dropped games to defending 2A state champion Catholic New Iberia and 5A Bourgeois.
Before the district opener at home against Hanson Memorial on Oct. 9, the Eagles will play 3A Bunkie at home Thursday and 5A Central Lafourche on the road Oct. 3.
On Friday, quarterback Xailen Hebert led the Eagles in rushing with 91 yards and both touchdowns on 14 carries. Hayden Walker ran 21 times for 82 yards, and Parker Gros finished with 64 yards on 12 trips.
Hebert completed one of his two passes to Gros for 5 yards.
St. Edmund 60,
Morgan City 0
The home team held Morgan City to only 120 total yards and only 27 on the ground.
Lamarion Griffin’s 18 net yards on 11 carries led the team.
Griffin also accounted for the Tigers’ biggest play, a 48-yard pass to quarterback J.P. McCleary.
McCleary threw 12 times, completing seven with three interceptions. Gerrin Hayes had three catches for 31 yards, and Griffin had one for 20.
For St. Edmund, Nathan Driggs rushed 19 times for 167 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Nathan Zaunbrecher threw for 229 yards, hitting seven of 13 passes. Hudson Simon was the leading receiver with four catches for 150 yards and two TDs.
Morgan City opens its District 8-4A schedule at home Friday against Vandebilt Catholic.
