JOSE ORTIZ Y PINO
Jose Ortiz y Pino, “Julio the Gardener,” brought laughter to Las Vegas airwaves. Jose Ortiz y Pino, known to Las Vegas radio listeners as the beloved personality “Julio the Gardener,” passed away peacefully on December 1, 2024, at the age of 72. Though he spent his later years in Vermont, Jose left an indelible mark on the Las Vegas airwaves during his time at KLUC in the ’80s and ’90s.
Born on August 7, 1952, in Santa Fe, NM, Jose’s passion for radio ignited early in life. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 16, ultimately achieving his childhood dream of becoming a popular radio DJ. As Julio the Gardener, he entertained millions with his humor, engaging personality, and love for Top 40 hits. He connected with his fans and colleagues, forming lasting bonds in the Las Vegas community.
Jose’s dedication to radio continued with his work at Talk America Radio Network out of Boston. He eventually settled in Vermont to be closer to family, but his love for Las Vegas remained. Beyond his successful radio career, Jose was a kind and caring man who cherished his family and friends. He found joy in simple pleasures, including spending time with his cats, tending to his yard, and relaxing with his favorite TV shows.
Jose is survived by his wife, Lori; his children, Ted, Kendra, and Adam; his grandchildren; his mother, Yolanda; and his sister, Maria.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, 30 Sunset Meadow, St. Albans, VT 05478, a cause close to Jose’s heart.
Though Jose may be gone, his laughter and the joy he brought to the Las Vegas airwaves will be remembered by all who tuned in to hear “Julio the Gardener.”
