Peabody – Esther Rose Furr Ellis, 87, of Peabody, formerly of Medford, passed peacefully into the arms of her savior on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Born on October 18, 1937 to the late Leon Lewis Furr and Iva Rose (Talbot) Furr, she became a blessing to all who knew her. Esther’s greatest joy was being “Grammy” to Cody Phillip, Jakob Stephen and Tara Rose.
After graduating from Medford High School with her childhood pal Aaronetta Brown, she joined Dorothy Taylor Green and Ann Flight at Lowell State Teachers’ College. They remained lifetime friends and were predeceased by their mutual friend and classmate Mary Ellen Gately. Esther then devoted her career to the Malden Public Schools, mostly at Maplewood Elementary. Her beloved colleague Jennie Paretti worked alongside Esther for many years and faithfully chauffeured her to musical theater events until her final days.
Esther joins her parents in heaven along with siblings Gloria, Jean, Richard and a baby brother who passed in childhood. She leaves behind siblings Leon Lewis Furr Jr., and Dawn Lewis. Esther was a most amazing Mom and Mom-In-Love to Stephen Phillip and Teri Lyn, Maria Lynne and Debra Ann, and David Ross.
While raising her own children and educating others, she studied at Lesley University for her M.Ed. When Esther retired from teaching, she enjoyed outings with the “Purple Ladies”, swimming with Chris Banville and Patricia Finegan, rooting for the Boston Celtics and worshipping with her church family at New Life Christian Center. She was especially close to Pastors Eliott and Evelyn Penn as well as Jodi and Ralph Trinidad who made sure to get her to Sunday services and other church celebrations.
In addition to the loved ones noted above, she will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends. Everyone who met her loved “Grammy”.
