John Culbertson Grant was born in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on April 10, 1933. His parents were Allegra Garrett Grant and Haswell Walsworth Grant. His family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1939, and then to Casper, Wyoming in 1951. He graduated in 1955 from the ROTC program at the University
