PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert Library plans to host The Longest Table, a nationwide event that helps bring people together over a meal to discuss topics relevant to their community. The event will take place on Sept. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 178 Main St., Prince Frederick, on the brick path running between the Courthouse Annex and The Vallario Building.

The Longest Table serves as a discussion model for people who may not otherwise cross paths, focusing on building connections and coming together to solve problems. The event features a theme each year to help guide conversation. This year, it’s “Opportunity.” The theme description reads:

“Some say there’s nothing for young people here but maybe we just aren’t connecting with what’s here. Come share what you know and explore ways our community helps teens and emerging adults build skills, find belonging and thrive — with help from all of us.”

The Longest Table is exactly what it sounds like. In recent years, communities all over the country have set up tables stretching across parking lots or down city blocks to help bring people together in the most traditional way possible: by sharing a good meal. Eating together is universally seen as a way for people to bond and build connections — meals serve as the basis for cultivating ideas and community, whether it’s in the home, in restaurants or at a very, very long table. Children’s health experts have long championed the “family meal” each night because of the benefits eating together brings.

But there is a twist on this event. Even if you buy tickets together, parties will be split up to encourage attendees to get to know new people and hear new ideas. So it won’t be your typical dinner with friends and family, but it will likely be an unforgettable experience.

The menu is not yet available for this event but will be posted soon. Children of middle school age and up are welcome.

The Longest Table is a ticketed event, and tickets must be purchased in advance. You can get tickets on the library website — sponsorship opportunities are also available for this event.
