OCEAN CITY, Md.— A carbon monoxide leak at the Ashore Resort and Beach Club prompted a large-scale emergency response Friday morning, leading to 18 people being evaluated by EMS and four transported to local hospitals, according to Ocean City fire officials.
Crews were dispatched just after 11 a.m., Aug 1, 2025, to the hotel, located in the 10100 block of Coastal Highway, after a carbon monoxide alarm activated inside the building. Firefighters arrived to find elevated carbon monoxide levels on both the first and second floors and began evacuating guests and staff.
The incident quickly escalated. As the number of potential exposures grew, the on-scene commander declared a mass casualty incident, triggering additional EMS support. By 1:45 p.m., a total of 18 individuals had been medically assessed. Four were transported for treatment of elevated carboxyhemoglobin levels, and one person refused transport.
The building’s gas supply was shut off, and firefighters began ventilating the structure as officials worked to locate the source of the leak. Investigators with the Ocean City Fire Marshal’s Office, building inspectors, and gas company representatives remain on site.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can accumulate indoors and become lethal if undetected. Officials credited the alarm system for alerting responders before conditions worsened.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
