It is with heavy but full hearts that we announce the passing of Carol Gierut, 69, of Darien, IL. Carol passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Carol is the middle sibling of 3 children. She was born in Chicago, IL in 1956 and is the daughter of Frank & Josephine Podlogar (Kuhelj). Carol grew up in Chicago. She was a graduate of Lourdes High School. Carol dedicated her working years to Cook County social service for 30 years. She was also a member of Darien’s City Council, Plan Commission, and Police Commission for a number of years. Carol was a loving, selfless and loyal person. She always made others feel welcome in her home and cared deeply for everyone that came into her life. She was a devoted wife, mother, Gaga, daughter and sister. She was a breath of fresh air and a source of strength and light to the world and all the lives she touched. Carol is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Josephine Podlogar, her parents in law Joseph and Alice Gierut, and is survived by her husband Edwin, children Lauren Selman (Nick) and Michael (Dana), her grandchildren William, Cameron, Maddie and Jude, and her brothers Frank (Linda) and David (Jennifer) as well as countless other relatives and friends who loved her deeply. Carol’s wishes were to forego a traditional service. The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life in her honor. In lieu of flowers, Carol’s wishes were to have donations made in her honor to either Northwestern Prentice Women’s Hospital (Friends of Prentice) or Northwestern Lurie Children’s Hospital.
