Mildred Jean Sewell Carter, age 95 of Somerset, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Mildred was born on July 2, 1929 at Crab Orchard, KY, the daughter of William Frank Sewell and Ida Randall Sewell. She was married to Charles Henry “Red” Carter and he preceded her in death on February 2, 1993. Mildred is fondly remembered by her family as being a “remarkable woman.” She lived at her home at age 95; could still ride a bicycle at age 86; (she never told her age); she loved to travel, always ready to go; she enjoyed taking walks and looking for herbs; loved family dinners and cornbread was required with every meal; one of her famous sayings was “Well, I’ll be a John Brown;” was never called Great Granny, just Granny; Mildred enjoyed watching Blue Bloods, the Waltons, and Gone With The Wind; She was a loving and nurturing Mother, and Granny.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Ottie (Melissa) Carter and Doyle C. (Kathy) Carter, both of Somerset; her son in law, Tim Mobbs; Grandchildren, Eric L. (Lori) Carter, Ross (Emily) Carter, Rachel Carter (Daniel Drury), Tandra J. Carter (Dennis Krages) Tori L. (Aaron) Halcomb, Chad Mobbs (Rheagan Catron) and Cheyenne Bowling; great grandchildren, Brianne Carter (Taylor) Frye, Taylor Leanne Carter, Hannah Carter, Aubrey Downey, Olivia Clark, Ava Cochran, Nora Halcomb, Dylan Krages and Raylyn Krages, and Wyatt Dean Krages coming in March; extended family and friends who are saddened by her passing.
In addition to her parents, William Frank and Ida Sewell and her husband, Charles Henry Carter; Mildred was preceded in death by her daughter, Alice “Marla” Carter Mobbs on September 20, 2020; her great grandson, Carter Ray Halcomb on December 2, 2021; and her siblings, Willard Sewell, Clifford Sewell, Delno Sewell, Francis Marler and Tressie Sewell.
Visitation for Ms. Carter will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. Her funeral service will follow on Tuesday, December 10th at 12:00 pm at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Mike Griffis officiating. Burial will be at Mill Springs National Cemetery.
