David Ernest Johnson, 73, of Norborne passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
David was born Jan. 20, 1951, in Carrollton, the son of Ernest Clifton and Helen Genevieve (Giles) Johnson.
He was united in marriage to Janice Lynn Sharp of Carrollton on March 30, 1972. She survives of the home.
Additional survivors include his two daughters, Jennifer Johnson (Ryan Miller) of Norborne and Jessica Johnson (Jesse Stirton) of Lee’s Summit; and four grandchildren, Jenasyn Baker, Jolie Baker, Josilyn Stirton and Jemma Stirton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Larry Jo, Richard and Jimmy in infancy.
David was raised and educated in Norborne, graduating with the class of 1970.
His love for music began at an early age when, at just 5 years old, he was asked to sing at a birthday party — a moment that sparked a lifelong passion. By 14, he joined his first band and went on to become an accomplished musician.
David played rhythm guitar, keyboards and sang, performing with numerous local bands throughout his career. Some of the groups he was proud to be part of included The J-Walkers, Clifton Hill, Phantasia, Trizo 50, The Rhythm Riders and the J-Street Band.
David was not only a talented musician but also a dedicated member of the Norborne community. He was a founding contributor to Norborne’s renowned Soybean Festival and its popular Ha-Ha Show. He worked as the Norborne superintendent of municipal utilities and held roles with Gibson Farms in the early 1970s, as Norborne’s chief of police and as a member of the volunteer fire department. His deep love for Norborne was evident in his active participation in the Norborne Jaycees and the Norborne Interested Citizens, as well as his membership in the Norborne Methodist Church.
Outside of his professional and community work, David enjoyed fishing and cherished time spent with his family and grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. His dedication to his family, friends and community leaves a lasting legacy.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Norborne Interested Citizens. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home; 507 E. Main St.-P.O. Box 190; Richmond, MO 64085.
Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation was scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the funeral home. Interment was to be in Fairhaven Cemetery, Norborne.
