She is survived by her beloved husband of 51 years, James Dawan – their 52nd anniversary would have been celebrated this December. Together, they built a life full of warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for their family. She was the proud mother of Hashim Dawan, Fareed Dawan, and Nisreen Dawan, and the cherished grandmother of Elias Dawan, Evie Dawan, and Ryann Dawan. She also leaves behind her dear brother, Dr. Anthony Newton.
Deborah was preceded in death by her loving mother, Gloria Hendricks, whose memory she held close throughout her life.
For over 12 years, Deborah dedicated her talents to teaching elementary school, shaping the minds and hearts of countless children. She retired proudly after the birth of her grandchildren to devote her time fully to family – a role she treasured most.
She was a gifted artist in every sense: she sewed with care, crafted beautiful jewelry, and filled her home with creativity and comfort. An extraordinary cook, Deborah’s meals brought her family together and left a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to sit at her table. Her homemade pies, cakes, and loaves of bread, always made from scratch, were nothing short of legendary. She also loved to shop, always with a thoughtful eye for beauty and meaning. Above all, she created a home that radiated love, warmth, and welcome.
A woman strong in her faith, Deborah found peace in her beliefs and strength in prayer. Her funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, at the Islamic Center of Baton Rouge, followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park.
“Indeed we belong to God, and indeed to Him we shall return.” – Qur’an 2:156
Deborah was the heart of her family – the kind of mother, wife, grandmother, and sister who made everyone feel safe and deeply loved. She will be missed more than words can express and remembered every single day.
