Haverhill – Georgios Grafakos of Haverhill, MA, died peacefully in his sleep on March 10, 2025.
Georgios was born on March 21, 1941 in Kalamata, Greece to Efstathios Grafakos and Antonia (Stamateas) Grafakos. When he was 17, Georgios left home to work as a merchant marine for a Greek shipping company. For the next 13 years he transported cargo to various ports all over the world. In 1973 he met his wife, Hariklia Sofronas, and emigrated to Haverhill where he worked as a machine operator for GFI, Bailey’s and later Malden Mills in Lawrence.
Devoted husband, father and grandfather, over the next 53 years, Georgios and Hariklia built a beautiful life together. Georgios was a hard working man but what he loved most was his family. He was a wonderful cook and was happiest when his family was all together sharing a meal, while also discussing what the next meal would be.
He is survived by his wife Hariklia; daughters Tonia and her husband Bill Tygielski of Chicago, Stethia and her husband Michael Criner of Chicago and Constantina Knecht of Newton, NH; grandchildren Zoe and Eliana Criner and Oscar and Ethan Knecht; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
