Helen Yvonne “Vonnie” Norwood, aged 85, of Yorktown, VA, and formerly of Montross, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Born in Annapolis, MD, to Walter H. Fowler and Helen C. (Rodgers) Fowler, Yvonne was a graduate of Annapolis High School. Throughout her working career in both government and private sectors, Yvonne used her exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills as an office administrator. While working for the Department of the Navy, she also used her gift of hospitality to chair social events for the Chesapeake Division Recreation Association.
Yvonne’s Christian faith was a guiding light throughout her life. A devoted member of the church, she taught Sunday school, served on the Altar Guild, and was known for her heartfelt notes of encouragement. Her family was her priority. From her devotion to her husband and children, visiting her elderly aunts and uncles, taking care of her elderly parents, and enjoying her grandchildren, she leaves behind a legacy of selfless love. Yvonne’s life was also enriched by her love for jazz music, which she sang in her younger years. Throughout her life she enjoyed working in her yard and bird watching.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Joseph Thomas Norwood, Yvonne is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Kimberley and Michael Banta of Augusta, GA, and Wendy and Jeffrey Thomson of Yorktown, VA; her four cherished grandchildren Deborah Banta, Joseph Thomson, Sarah Banta, and Mark Thomson; and her sister, Sylvia Michaelson and husband Larry of Helena, MT, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Yvonne will be laid to rest beside her husband at Quantico National Cemetery, a testament to their enduring bond, on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 12:30 PM. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1677 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, where she was a member. Arrangements are by Amory Funeral Home in Yorktown.
Yvonne will forever be cherished by her family and friends and her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her. Christ’s loving atonement assures us that she is now at peace and hears the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant … enter into the joy of your lord.” She will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mercy Fund of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church (1677 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185). The Mercy Fund is used to assist families and individuals in need in the Williamsburg area.
