Kohorst, Edward

Edward Joseph Kohorst, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from Rockwall, TX, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024, following a long illness.
Mr. Kohorst was born April 5, 1943, in Springfield, IL, to Joseph and Leona Kohorst. He joined the United States Air Force in 1963 and served four years as a crew chief refueling aircraft over North Vietnam.
Following an honorable discharge, Mr. Kohorst graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and joined the Illinois Department of Education as a publications designer. In 1984, his journalism career was launched at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where he served as chief artist. The Dallas Morning News recruited Mr. Kohorst in 1987 to serve as editorial news art director. In 1994, he and other news team members were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Excellence in International Reporting. Mr. Kohorst, who during his career also served as president of the Society for News Design, retired from The Dallas Morning News in 2002.
Mr. Kohorst is survived by his wife of 30 years, Olivia Casey; his children from a previous marriage, Kirsten (Robert) Sellers of Webster Grove, IL, and Joe (Vanessa) Kohorst of the Nashville, TN, area; and two grandchildren, Emma Sellers and Zoie Sellers. He is also survived by sisters Karol (David) Sullivan of St. Paul, MN, and Aggie Cronson of St. Paul, MN, and sister-in-law Joan Kohorst of St. Lous, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Fred Kohorst , and his brother, Joey Kohorst.
A memorial service will be held August 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home, 2500 TX-66, Rockwall, TX.
