Michael I. Keller, M.D.

“Live, let live, explore, experiment, laugh, sing and help others do the same.”
– Michael Keller, M.D.

With his soft spoken and caring bedside manner, Dr. Keller spent almost 50 years caring for people with arthritis and osteoporosis. Although a longtime Californian, he was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., raised there and in Westbury, Long Island, attended Hobart College and received his M.D. from the State University of New York. He began his practice in San Diego in 1975, and subsequently the San Diego Arthritis Medical Clinic which served San Diego, Chula Vista, Poway, El Centro and Yuma, Az. specializing in rheumatology, rehabilitation and research.
Dr. “Paz” Pazirandeh, who has continued his work at the clinic, said “Dr. Keller was a leader and a great icon who provided care for thousands of patients and medical practices for so many doctors. Dr. Keller served on the board of the Arthritis Foundation for many years and chaired the medical scientific committee.
Michael is survived by his loving and supportive husband Daniel Veale, a businessman and developer. They had a 45-plus year relationship. When Michael, along with Dan, managed to find spare time, he enjoyed boating, horseback riding, cars, traveling, collecting, cooking and his number one passion after medicine was music. Keller was an accomplished accordionist and part of the group The Klezmeds.
Keller considered the five jewels in his crown to be his son Kevin Keller, daughter Tamara Keller and three grandsons Maxwell, Alistair, and Fredrik. Kevin is a successful businessman married to the lovely Lana. Tamara, the light of his life, is an award- winning attorney, who is a global director at Accenture and her fianc Leonardo Husid, an attorney in San Diego. He would light up when speaking about them. He is also survived by his sister Shari Ryan, a retired English teacher. All are residents of San Diego. Michael truly loved his family and friends both near and afar.
