Neil R. Linsenmayer

Rockport – Neil Linsenmayer passed away at home on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, surrounded by his wife, Betsy, his daughter, Diana, and his son, David.
Born in Ohio, Neil spent part of his youth in Greece, where his father was stationed while working for the Marshall Plan. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Neil began a 31-year career as an analyst with the CIA. At the age of 55, he happily retired to Rockport, where he pursued his passion for painting.
Neil’s artistic journey began in Northern Virginia during his career in national security affairs. While taking classes at the Art League School in Alexandria, VA, he gained recognition when two of his works were acquired by the National Institutes of Health. In 1992, he became an artist member of the North Shore Arts Association (NSAA), later serving on its Board of Trustees, and in 2019, he joined Rockport Art Association. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions, including a 2006 show at the Kensington-Stobart Gallery in Salem, MA, and was part of local collections such as the Cape Ann Historical Society and Rockport Public Library.
He once said about his art, “Light, color, and shape are the main ingredients in all my work. For example, how light reflects off one surface onto another, changing its color, luminosity, and character. Light and color give form to objects and are vital to creating the illusion of space. They are key to recapturing the mood of the scene, be it lively, serene or somber. I am drawn to scenes that have a story to tell. That is why many of my paintings feature objects that are old and worn—particularly architectural or marine subjects that bear witness to the passage of time.”
In addition to his artistic pursuits, he enjoyed home improvement projects, building multiple decks, and completing a full kitchen remodel of the family home in Rockport.
Neil also found fulfillment working as an IT specialist for Senior Care in Gloucester, where he appreciated the opportunity to contribute to the community.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betsy; his daughter, Diana, of Winchester, MA; his son, David, of Arlington, MA; and his beloved grandchildren Lenny, Luisa, Isabella and Emma.
He was predeceased by his brother, Tadd Linsenmayer, of Florida.
Services will be held privately.
Arrangements by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington Street, Gloucester.
