Entrepreneur Marilyn Lieberman-Berliner—who had many connections to Chicago—passed away on Dec. 10 at the age of 84, according to a social media post from her daughters.
The Facebook post read, “Marilyn lived a vibrant and fulfilling life. She was a woman of many talents, owning various businesses throughout her lifetime and forming meaningful connections with everyone she encountered. Known for her kind and generous spirit, Marilyn’s love and compassion touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her infectious energy, warm personality, and signature red lipstick will be fondly remembered by those whose lives she brightened.”
Friend Amy Maggio told Windy City Times, “Since we first met in Chicago around 1990, Marilyn and I maintained a close friendship. Marilyn developed and owned a marketplace on Belmont, Le Market, which housed some early LGBTQ+ businesses, including the former bookstore People Like Us. When I was in charge of development efforts at AIDS Foundation Chicago, Marilyn helped create a brand-new Women Care event. Women Care was the lesbian community’s response to bringing awareness to those living with HIV/AIDS. Marilyn remained active in the Belmont area business community, and when I became the executive director at Stop AIDS, Marilyn joined the board of directors.
“Through many years, countless events, and initiatives, Marilyn has been a force for equality and women’s rights. Marilyn also maintained a home in Union Pier, Michigan—a gathering place for women and friends in Michigan. She was best known for celebrating her friend’s milestones, her family’s wedding and special events, and after she moved from Chicago, she opened a wonderful specialty food shop, the Whistle Stop. Marilyn’s personality, infectious laugh, fabulous smile and trademark red lipstick lips will live through the many stories her presence generated.”
Lieberman-Berliner later owned Marilyn’s Restaurant in New Buffalo, Michigan.
Lieberman-Berliner is survived by daughters Paige Schlake (Christopher) and Lainie Stueber (Daniel); grandson Rowan Schlake; granddaughters Alexandria Lainhart (Matthew) and Haley Grum (Peter); and great-granddaughter, Maysie.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Marilyn’s memory to Deborah’s Place in Chicago. Be sure to include Lieberman-Berliner’s name in the dedication section of the form.
