St. Mary’s County: Eugene Harris Acquitted In Attempted Murder Trial

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — On May 20, 2025, a St. Mary’s County jury returned not guilty verdicts on all counts in the case of Eugene Terril Harris, who had faced an array of charges including attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and multiple firearm violations.

The charges stemmed from a shooting incident that took place on Nov. 9, 2024, in Lexington Park. The victim, a 36-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body and later sought help at the Lexington Park Rescue Squad. Harris was arrested nearly two weeks later.

During the two-day trial in the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County, Harris’s defense, led by attorney Yladrea Drummond, mounted a vigorous challenge to the prosecution’s case. In closing arguments, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael McGraw was criticized for taking what Drummond called “distasteful shots at the defense” and suggesting she should “go back to law school.”

The jury returned its decision after just 50 minutes of deliberation.

“This trial wasn’t about the attorneys,” said Drummond. “This was about justice. I will never lose sight of that when fighting for my client’s interests, rights and their freedom.”

Together, these verdicts highlight the role of jury trials in safeguarding individual rights and illustrate the contentious nature of prosecutorial discretion in sensitive and complex cases.
