The family of Elisabeth “Babette” Stewart wishes to let family, friends and former students know of her passing on December 28th, 2024. She left us peacefully and surrounded by her loving children as well as sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She lived a remarkable life of ninety-four and a half years during which she met and married John “Gene” Stewart. They were married for 65 and a half years. After marrying, she relocated from her native France to the U.S., earned a BA and MA from Oklahoma State, taught French at OSU from 1970 to 1977 and then taught French and Spanish at Stillwater High from 1978 to 1986 before retiring.
She was a kind and gentle woman. She loved her family and appreciated her friends. She is at peace now and we believe that she is reunited with her one true love, our father who pre-deceased her in 2020. She enjoyed good health until her time arrived, she passed quickly in her sleep, and we are grateful that she did not suffer in death. She will be missed and forever in our hearts.
She was born in Biarritz, France on June 29th, 1930, and was predeceased by her husband, Gene Stewart in January 2020. She lived with her family in Stillwater for 58 years on both south Stanley Street and later east of town on Meadowbrook Lane before relocating to Florida, Colorado, and later Michigan with family members. She was a quilter, an avid reader, spoke three languages fluently, did translation work in retirement, volunteered at Elite Repeat, and was well loved by her students at Stillwater High.
She is survived by her four children, Carole Nyenhuis and son-in-law Ron Nyenhuis of Holland, MI, Jerome Stewart and Robin Fant of Longwood, FL, Valerie Silvers and son-in-law Steven Silvers of Lakewood, CO, and Frank Stewart of Port Orange, FL. Grandchildren include Heather Davis of Michigan, Danielle Webb of New Jersey, Marissa Silvers of Colorado, and Madelline Silvers of Colorado. Great-grandchildren include Brittaney Neuman, Bryanne Churches, Bryley Fillman of Michigan, and Aria Keogh of New Jersey. Beatrice Perrier of France is her sole surviving sister.
Burial services will be held in Wynnewood, Oklahoma at Oaklawn Cemetery on February 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life at Artesian Hotel in Sulphur, Oklahoma.
