WALDORF, Md. — A fully equipped tiny house built by students at North Point High School is now available for public viewing and bidding through Charles County Public Schools (CCPS). The structure is the result of a multi-year project by students enrolled in the school’s construction, design and management pathway, with support from the welding and electrical trades programs.

The building project began in 2020 when the construction program instructor, Tony Jones, pitched the idea of constructing a tiny home to the Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff at North Point. The goal was to showcase the variety of skills students were learning through the school’s Construction, Design and Management Career Pathway.

When Jones retired at the end of the 2022 school year, instructor Charlie Burch took over the project and oversaw its completion. “We averaged roughly 13 students working on this depending on the year,” Burch said. “The students enjoyed working on it because they were able to see the project start on paper and watch it grow as they completed the steps.”

“This build has brought real-world skills to the classroom where students can demonstrate what they have learned, including how to read build plans or blueprints, material cost analysis and project management,” said Kevin Reisinger, CTE content specialist.

Built atop an 8-by-20-foot trailer and standing 11 feet, 3 inches tall, the 160-square-foot studio-style home includes a kitchen with a sink, microwave, cooktop, refrigerator and freezer. The bathroom features a standing shower, sink and toilet. A Murphy-style bed, air conditioning and full electrical components complete the livable interior. The design and construction were certified by Pacific West Tiny Homes to ensure safety and structural compliance.
