Pendleton

Tommie Lee Pendleton, age 77, a native of Whatley and a resident of Grove Hill, was born on Jan. 15, 1947 to the parentage of the late Truman Pendleton and Rosetta Pendleton. He departed this life on Oct. 19, 2024 at Monroe County Hospital in Monroeville.

He joined the First Baptist Church of Whatley at an early age and attended First Baptist Church until his health failed. He was a mechanic, employed by the Clarke County Board of Education from which he retired after many years. He was also in the Army National Guard and retired after 20 years of service. Tommie was a man of few words. “Snag,” as he was affectionately known, loved fishing, gardening and spending time with his family. He had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off of his back.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Barbara Rigsby Pendleton; five brothers, Michael Pendleton, Edward Pendleton, Jackie Johns, Wilmer Johns and Alfred Pendleton; and one sister, Dorothy Mae Pendleton.

He leaves to honor and cherish his memories his four children, Jennifer (Dondre) Petty of Mobile, Tyrone Pendleton of Toledo, Ohio, Anthony Pendleton of Grove Hill and Regina Tarvin of Whatley; nine sisters, Lois Dailey, Martha Hunt, Shann Taylor and Darrene Burroughs, all of Whatley, Janice Bills and Thelma Pendleton, both of Toledo, Ohio, Angela, Effie and Alanna Johns, all of California; four brothers, Bobby Pendleton of Grove Hill, Chester (Michelle) Johns of Georgia, Devan Burroughs of Troy and Terry Burroughs of Whatley; two uncles, Nick (JoAnn) Fails of Toledo, Ohio and Albert Hill of California; four aunts, Bertha Ezell of Whatley, Evon Chapman of New York, Velma and Augusta, both of Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Breaun, Shemiah, Tiauna, Tyronica, Tavarius, Tamia, Keshonna, and Aaliyah; 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends; three very devoted cousins/friends, Gary Johnson of Grove Hill, Woodie Gaillard of Whatley and Pastor Eddie Roy Pugh Jr. of Grove Hill.

Services were held Saturday, Oct. 26, 1 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Whatley. Rev. Fernell Pendleton, was the pastor and eulogist. Military Rites at Graveside and the interment ceremony were in the church cemetery.
